Set sail for a summer adventure! Our Out Of Office summertime blend is back, and this year, this tropical vacation comes in the form of a two-component blend. Each cup will transport you to the sandy beaches and ocean breeze you’ve been dreaming of, so try yours now to find your summer escape.
What are the two components that make up the Out Of Office?
This year, Out Of Office is made with just two coffees—our El Salvador Cerro Las Ranas and our Organic Honduras Manos De Mujer Fair Trade.
The El Salvador Cerro Las Ranas is a honey processed coffee from the Apaneca, Ahuachapán region of El Salvador. This coffee comes from producer Jose Antonio Salaverria, of the JASAL farm, and is grown in volcanic loam soil at an altitude of 1450 - 1780 masl. With its honey process, the red coffee cherries are picked, sorted, and taken straight to the clay patios and elevated tables to be dried with the cherry mucilage still intact. "Cerro Las Ranas" translates to "hill of frogs," which was named in homage to the farm's location by a lagoon that is home to thousands of frogs. JASAL is a family owned farm where Mr. Salaverria and his sons take part in all aspects of the process.
The second component is the Organic Honduras Manos De Mujer Fair Trade, which is a washed coffee that comes from our producer partner in Honduras, COMSA! “Manos De Mujer” translates to “hands of women,” as this farm is a rare one of its kind, owned and operated by all women. Each 310g bag sold of the Out Of Office translates to $0.10 added to the producer’s Community Development Fund, or CDF. For every 2lb. bag sold, $0.30 is contributed to the CDF, and for every 5lb. bag sold, $0.60 is deposited to the CDF. In 2025, we contributed almost $1,000 USD alone to COMSA via their CDF, which converts to 26,560 Honduran Lempira! Using their CDF, COMSA is working with the UN to establish the Target Gender Equity Initiative. This program aims to support and enforce gender equity policies, run a Women’s Committee, and provide leadership and management training for both women and men. The overall goal is to increase women’s representation and leadership within the organization, especially at higher management levels.
Why did you select these two coffees, and what does each one contribute to Out Of Office?
Combining a coffee that's honey processed with one that's a washed process allowed us to create a blend that has depth, balance, and complexity. There's a bright acidity and clarity that develops from the washed beans, and a syrupy body and natural sweetness that comes from the honey processed beans. This kind of blend is often very approachable, with enough sweetness and fruit to interest specialty coffee drinkers, but also the right amount of chocolate and balance to appeal to people who prefer classic coffee flavors. It was created with a profile that will taste great as a pour over, but can also shine as a cold brew or as espresso.
What inspired the name?
For our brand designer, Natasha Lozano, the blend was inspired by the feeling of freedom that comes from stepping away from obligations. Whether those obligations are work or routines that can leave us feeling like we’re stuck in a rut, the Out Of Office was meant to replicate the sigh of relief you feel when you’re able to unplug and unwind. “When you see a coworker's out-of-office message, or decide to declare a day out-of-office for yourself, the possibilities of what that entails suddenly feel endless,” she began. “Maybe it's a day to relax at home, an opportunity to enjoy a staycation, a chance to hit the road for an adventure, or even a moment to simply do something out of the ordinary. That's the spirit we hoped to capture with this blend, and that’s how I came up with the name. We wanted this blend to embody this idea that you have a chance to check out, recharge, and enjoy a cup of expertly roasted coffee, no matter how long the moment lasts. This blend is a reminder to make time for yourself and embrace the freedom of the summer season, and the whimsy and carefree atmosphere that can come along with it.”
What’s the story behind the label?
Just as we had hoped to do with the name of the coffee, we intended to create a label that captured that slightly playful tone as well. You’re not exactly on vacation yet, still seeing the computer in front of you, but you’re heading out-of-office, ready to take on an adventure. Things are slightly hazy, as the excitement of being disconnected from reality is taking center stage. As our office worker stares out into the open sky and rolling hills, however, his shoulders are relaxed, representing the way we’re able to find solace in the small moments that bring us joy.
What does this coffee taste like?
Out Of Office brings out tropical fruits and florals galore. Upon the first sip, you’ll experience the taste of a white guava—floral, with a sweet aroma comparable to a pear and strawberry hybrid. Once those guava notes begin to fade away, the next experience is strong, reminiscent of a blood orange. Slightly different from regular oranges, blood oranges tend to lean more towards raspberry or grape flavors, balancing well with its citrus tones. Finally, as the coffee cools and as the sip lingers on the edge of your tongue and taste buds, you’ll taste pomegranate. It's vibrant, bursting with a sweet tartness that can compare to cranberries, cherries, or grapes. It's wine-like and punchy, while still remaining light and bright. Altogether, Out Of Office is a tropical exploration within a cup. As if taking you through the origins of each of these fruits—from the Caribbean, to Sicily, to the Himalayas—it’s more than just a coffee. It’s a breath of fresh air to get you through the long summer workdays.
Who would enjoy this coffee?
This coffee is ideal for those who want to try something new, something fruity, and something that’s more of an experience than a regular cup of coffee! Transport onto a white sandy beach with just a single sip of coffee, and brighten your mornings in the office by imagining yourself on vacation with each sip.
How should I brew this coffee?
We love it when our coffees are multi-purpose! Out Of Office can be best enjoyed as a pourover, a cold brew, or even as espresso.
For a pourover, we recommend the following:
- 1:14.5 ratio
- 24.5g coffee ground medium coarsely
- 360g water at 204°F
- 3:30 total brew time
- a more detailed brewer such as an April Brewer or a Kalita Brewer
Recipe:
- Start with a 60g pour to bloom your coffee.
- Wait 30 seconds before your next pour.
- Continue to pour in 60g increments every 20 seconds or so - don’t overfill your filter, but don’t let the grounds completely dry before your next pour, either!
- Once you’ve poured all 360g of water, wait for the grounds to dry and the water to finish dripping into your carafe.
- Enjoy!
For cold brew, we recommend a one part coffee, five parts water ratio.
Grind your coffee as coarsely as possible, and steep in cold water for 12-24 hours. The longer you steep, the stronger the coffee will be. If possible, use a toddy filter for your grinds. If not, strain them out once your cold brew is done brewing with a cheese cloth, or even a Chemex or pourover filter!
For espresso, we recommend starting with the following dial recipe:
- In: 21g of beans
- Out: 38g of espresso
- Extraction Time: 23 seconds
- Temperature (if your espresso machine allows adjustments): 201°F
Bonus: Nothing says summer like a refreshing iced coffee! Try the Out Of Office as a specialty drink with the recommended recipe below.
Tropical Tonic:
- Start with a 16oz cup.
- Fill the cup with ice.
- Add 1oz of pineapple juice.
- Add 1oz of Passion Fruit Juice.
- Add 4oz of Tonic Water.
- Top with a double shot of Out Of Office pulled as espresso!
